Project Week

This project has been an adventure. As I am working on the project this weekend, I am on a time crunch. My plan is to beta test this project with my classes starting on Monday. At this point I am not sure if I want to do it with all of my classes or just one or two. I am leaning towards all 5 sessions to see what Moodle can do as well as how I could use it. The project is set up as the first ten days of my class. I teach 7th and 8th Graders different computer programs in a project-based class where they create projects using different software. The first ten days is an introduction to the class and the only whole class activities we do all trimester. Students are introduced to web safety and fair use as well as using power point to research some of the pioneers of technology. In using Moodle, I hope to transfer what we do in class and show how it can be used on Moodle. I am using this project as a test of the program for myself and other teachers. We shall see how it goes.

I will be curious to see how the test goes tomorrow.  I want to include a video clip of the tour of the site but decided that I am going to do that as I take the class through it.

Wish me luck.

  1. Good luck Chris! I am sure that everything will work out fine. And if it doesn't, why...that is why we have beta testing, right??

Your detailed description is excellent. I looked at your syllabus for your class. I see how points are given by your rubric, but what about letter grades? Are they just percentages out of 184 points?

Your introduction video is good. Would the students be viewing your video from school with high speed connection or perhaps from home? I know for me, it took well over 1 minute for the view to download and begin playing. Have your try screencast? That is what I have used in the past to store and retrieve my videos from their site. It is the fastest way I have found for me to view my own videos that I have created. Just a thought.

Great job and the most complete that I have seen so far.

  2. Very detailed and clear syllabus so even if a student misses a class he/she will not be totally lost, they could just refer back to the syllabus.

The video is well done, you might want to consider uploading it to screencast or even YouTube (free) and include the link to your syllabus.

    I hope everything goes well!

  3. Thank you James and Grace. I have learned a lot about Moodle in the last two days with the students as we have been beta testing this in my lab. I have the students for 50 minute periods and we spent most of day one setting up the account and logging in. Today we spent the time taking a tour of the website with explanations of the different parts. I am going to make a movie explaining the different parts to help the students.
I agree about the problems of the video and the time to download. I didn't want to upload it to youtube because we are blocked at the school. Our website has a videopodcast section but they restrict the size of the clips. I did look at the screencast site and that seems to be what I am looking for. I plan to upload a video and see if I can view it at school. If I can, I will definately use it. The district controls so much of what we can do.
Thank you again. It has been fun so far (maybe not for the students, but what can you do.)
